South Shore Receives a $1,189,300 Grant for Housing for Individuals
with Mental Illness in Hopkinton

South Shore Mental Health Center was informed by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development that it has been chosen to receive a HUD Section 811 Program Grant. The purpose of the Section 811 Grant allows persons with disabilities to live independently in their communities by increasing the supply of rental housing with the availability of supportive services. The funds will be used to acquire and rehabilitate 10 one-bedroom units for low-income persons with chronic mental illness.

“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Women’s Development Corporation which was instrumental in helping us to secure this grant,” states Michael Johnson, President & CEO of South Shore. Mr. Johnson also expressed his commitment to providing more affordable housing for people with mental illness. “Affordable housing is the primary need for many of our consumers. The housing market in Rhode Island, especially in South County, has limited opportunities for individuals with disabilities to obtain housing in their own communities. The best mental health care we can provide is safe housing and meaningful employment,” states Mr. Johnson.

South Shore has identified a piece of property in Hopkinton and hopes to begin the construction process this coming year.
