Each individual in psychiatric crisis is assessed to determine the need for inpatient psychiatric admission. Individuals requiring hospitalization are referred to Butler, Rhode Island, St. Joseph’s, Landmark, Newport or Bradley Hospitals.
Referral to a receiving hospital is a collaborative effort between our emergency services staff and the staff of the sending hospital emergency room. Once admitted, liaison activities commence and our staff maintains an ongoing relationship with the treatment team at the inpatient unit. Discharge planning is a collaborative effort between our staff and the staff of the inpatient unit.

Emergency Services are available seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day to any active client of South Shore Mental Health Center. Emergency Services are similarly available to any citizen of Washington County via our collaborative agreements with South County and Westerly Hospitals. South Shore also maintains active liaison relationships with all psychiatric inpatient units located in the state of Rhode Island.

All initial contacts and/or requests for behavioral health services are routed through clinical triage, a service operated by our Emergency Services staff. All callers are screened to determine the nature of the contact and are appropriately routed to emergency services or our Intake Department.

Emergency Services is composed of five components:

1. Clinical Triage: determines the urgent, emergency or routine nature of each contact and facilitates the appropriate routing of the call.

2. Emergency Services: provides urgent and emergency face-to-face assessments of individuals in psychiatric crisis.

3. Acute Services: provides brief, follow-up care to stabilize symptoms and facilitate entry into the routine system of care, as appropriate.

4. Liaison Services: provides linkages and assistance with discharge planning for persons admitted to psychiatric inpatient units in Rhode Island.

5. Intake Services: conducts comprehensive psycho-social assessment by our independently licensed masters level clinician. Our medical director and disposition committee reviews each individual assessed and determines the appropriate clinical assignment.
